The Central Stags broke their Ford Trophy one-day duck for the summer with a six-wicket win over the Northern Knights at Hamilton today.
A fine allround bowling performance made their job easier than it might have been as the Knights were knocked over for 169 in 43.1 overs at Seddon Park.
Facing such a modest target the Stags were never going to be seriously stretched and so it proved as Mathew Sinclair made 63 not out to guide them home with 12 overs up their sleeves.
Sinclair’s 37th one-day half-century for the Stags occupied 87 balls and contained six boundaries as he and Kieran Noema-Barnett, who made an unbeaten 29 off 39, put on an unbroken stand of 64 for the fifth wicket.
Opener Peter Ingram had earlier made 30 while wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk chipped in with 29 to help the visitors seal an emphatic win.
Stags skipper Jamie How was more than happy to field first when he won the toss, a decision his bowlers appreciated as they dominated the Knights who began steadily enough as Brad Wilson and Hamish Marshall put on 28 for the first wicket.
Thereafter the Stags took control with Wilson the only batsman to better 35 as he topscored with 43. Corey Anderson also shone briefly to make 34 off 37 balls while Anton Devcich contributed 29 before being the last man out.
The bowlers shared the spoils around with legspinner Tarun Nethula taking three for 23 off seven overs, Peter Borren two for 13 off 4.1, Jacob Oram two for 26 off eight and Adam Milne two for 42 off his full complement of 10.
