West Indies on target for Cup

The West Indies is on target in its preparations for next year's Cricket World Cup but there is no room for relaxation.

That's the message from ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed after an inspection tour to the region before next year's March-April tournament.

He told AFP, "There is still much to be done.

"The message we bring is that we are very happy with progress but we can't relax.

Preparations have been frustrated by construction delays and by the price-hikes as hotels aim to cash in on the benefits to be had from the lengthy tournament which is expected to attract many tourists to the region.

ICC president Percy Sonn said the West Indies is further ahead than South Africa at the same stage in 2003, although he said this slightly different as South Africa had not built new stadiums.

"South Africa didn't build any new stadiums, they just improved on the old stadiums," he said.

Organising committee chief executive Chris Dehring said the region was the 'spiritual embryo of one-day cricket' and said the interest in the event was being reflected in the demand for accommodation.

He didn't think there would be an accommodation problem with plenty of variety being available for fans.

"I think this will be the most cosmopolitan Cricket World Cup.

"We will see people from more countries attending this World Cup than any others before. Ticket applications have been received from 124 countries.
