Patel contracted at ND

Northern Districts has another first-time contracted Domestic men’s player, in a further flow-on effect from Central contract recarding.

In the lead-up to the looming start of the official NZC Domestic season — the men’s one-day Ford Trophy gets underway next week, ND has already been able to hand wider squad member Cooper Rowell a maiden professional contract, after their fast bowler Matt Fisher’s elevation to a BLACKCAPS (‘Central’) contract.

Now, middle order batter Sandeep Patel joins the ND contracted player list in a similar fashion, replacing experienced and aggressive batter Nick Kelly on the Northern contracted roster.

Kelly has only just migrated back to ND from the Wellington Firebirds where he captained the capital’s association — and, like Fisher, he’ll still be available for Northern when he’s not on international duties.

But his roots go all the way back to the Counties Manukau Cricket Association, and now another Counties Manukau talent and Manukau Cricket Club scion in Sandeep Patel officially takes his place on the Northern list.

Kelly’s elevation was the result of Michael Bracewell needing to move from a BLACKCAPS contract to a casual contract for the season, after having accepted a Big Bash offer across the Tasman.

Fisher’s elevation came about from Mark Chapman doing the same.

Auckland-born Patel is no ingenue — he’s about to turn 28, and has already played eight Plunket Shield matches for Northern Districts, with a none-too-shabby high score of 145.

Having pulled on the maroon cap in only the four-day format so far, he made his debut in April 2022 as a former New Zealand Under 19 rep who also bowls a bit of medium pace.

His breakthrough 145 came in just his second apperance at the start of the following season, amid an innings victory against Otago.

He’s made scattered appearances since, last spotted in late 2024 while averaging 35.5 in the first-class competition.

ND has been a tough order to break into in recent years, with veteran run machines Bharat Popli and Jeet Raval having been inked in until their recent retirements; the likes of Henry Cooper in punishing form and another massively experienced player in former Auckland captain Robbie O’Donnell having headed down the SH1 to join the team a couple of seasons ago as well.

So a contract means more than an enhanced pay packet for Patel: it puts him squarely in the frame to make a more consistent contribution to the squad with whom he now gets to train regularly.

ND Assistant Coach Daniel Flynn, a prolific former ND batter himself presently holding the reins for his Association, said Patel has earned his opportunity.

“Sandeep’s previous performances have shown he has what it takes to succeed at first-class level,” says Flynn.

“I’m looking forward to working closely with him and seeing him continue to develop with ND.”

The new season begins in the one-day format on 28 October — next Wednesday — when ND travels to Nelson to play current Ford Trophy champs the Central Stags at Saxton Oval; the Auckland Aces host Canterbury at Kennards Hire Community Oval at Eden Park and the Firebirds host the Otago Volts at the Cello Basin Reserve.

The first half of the Ford Trophy regular season — five rounds — unfolds before the start of the first-class Plunket Shield on 19 November when Northern will begin at home in Hamilton against Auckland.

Admission to both The Ford Trophy and Plunket Shield is free at every match across the country this summer.
