The Otago Volts lead The Ford Trophy table after the completion of the opening round of 2026/27, this afternoon after becoming the only side to pocket a bonus point in the round.

In today's only match, the Otago Volts brushed off their travel trouble to comfortably beat hosts the Wellington Firebirds, joining the Auckland Aces and Northern Districts as Round One winners.

The match got off to a flying start for the southerners, paceman Matt Bacon (3/41) opening with a double wicket maiden.

Bacon chalked up his 100th one-day wicket for the team in the process, and it took some concerted middle order graft from the Firebirds to pick themselves up for a total of 213, after having been sent in.

Wellington's 22-year-old Otis Jackson (52) top-scored for the hosts with his second List A career half century, but they fell short of batting out their allotted overs, and the Volts' veteran opener Jack Boyle ensured Otago made light work of the chase in reply, ticking off the six-wicket victory with 12.5 overs to spare for that handy bonus point.

Boyle finished unbeaten on 74* and his younger opening partner Jacob Cumming had contributed a career-best 71 off just 62 balls: a maiden List A half century for Cumming, before the 123-run opening partnership ended with Jesse Tashkoff taking his wicket.
