Cricket fans across Aotearoa will be turning their attention to Nelson this summer, as Saxton Oval hosts the iconic North v South Twenty20 series.
The venue change marks a significant milestone for Nelson Cricket, whose ongoing commitment to the growth of women and girls cricket makes the region a natural choice to host one of the country’s most anticipated domestic match ups.
The North v South series showcases the top women’s domestic talent across New Zealand, providing players with a launchpad to make their case for international honours.
Since its debut in the 1998-99 season, the North v South series has been contested seven times, with the rivalry reignited in recent years and the North holding the upper hand.
This year’s series will be especially meaningful, given Nelson Cricket’s efforts in women & girls participation.
As Jake Inwood, Nelson Cricket’s General Manager explained, hosting the series in the school holidays is an exciting opportunity for the region.
“We are thrilled to be hosting the North v South series in Nelson this year,” said Inwood.
“Nelson Cricket has prioritised growing the women & girls game, with the launch of our Women & Girls Strategy and the Nelson Women's Cricket Club this year,”
“To have New Zealand’s best female stars come to our backyard is massive.”
“We’re hoping for a strong turnout from the local community these holidays and, in turn, inspire some future WHITE FERNS.”
With Saxton Oval’s world-class facilities and a passionate local cricket community, the stage is set for a memorable series.
All matches will be free entry and Nelson locals can look forward to a variety of activations, including meet-and-greet opportunities with some of the country’s top domestic stars.
The series will also be broadcast live and free on NZC YouTube.
Further information including team announcements will be released in the coming weeks.
