Ton up! Melie Kerr hits first Super Smash century

Blaze and WHITE FERNS superstar Melie Kerr has ticked off another special milestone in her career, with her first Super Smash century arriving in her team's first home game of the summer.

Blaze captain Kerr is only available for a limited time before the WPL, but she's making the most of it with the defending champion Blaze having now gone two from two.

Opener Kerr carried her bat to be unbeaten on 106* at the Cello Basin Reserve against the Auckland Hearts on Monday, having won the toss and batted first.

She underpinned her team to a competitive total of 184/2 and enjoyed brilliant support from fellow WHITE FERN and opener Georgia Plimmer who produced her own career best in a record partnership.

Plimmer pummelled 62 off just 53 balls to their 155-run opening stand - a new T20 Blaze record for all wickets.

It took 17.2 overs until the Hearts finally got a wicket and needless to say, by then the hosts were well on top en route to a 49-run victory that netted them their first bonus point.

The win also propelled the Blaze to the top of the table, ahead of last year's beaten finalist the Sparks - the only other team to have picked up a bonus in the early stages so far.

Spinner Xara Jetly took 3/21 - striking three times in the space of just four balls - in the Hearts' chase to help wrap up the win.

Kerr was on fire, blasting her Basin 50 off just 38 balls, 52 minutes (9x4, 1x6) and reaching her maiden Super Smash ton in 59 balls, in 84 minutes (16x4, 1x6).

The women's points so far:

  • Blaze (2 games) 9
  • Sparks (1 game) 5
  • Brave (1 washout) 2
  • Hearts (1 washout) 2
  • Hinds (1 game) 0
  • Magicians (1 game) 0

Today, the Sparks have a chance to catch the Blaze as they host the Central Hinds at Molyneux Park in stunning Alexandra, from 12.40pm.

The ground has already produced plenty of runs in this summer's competition, after experienced Spark import Laura Harris's world record-equalling feat a couple of days ago.
