The preseason retirement announcement of Caitlin Blakely means three familiar faces are now missing from the Otago Sparks class of 2027.
Earlier this year, Sparks captain Felicity Robertson announced her retirement from the game, and now another Sparks senior player in Blakely is hanging up her kit — while Olivia Gain has moved north to join the Canterbury Magicians.
Blakely has been a second-generation Otago cap — her father Geoff played 11 matches for the Otago Volts in the 1980s, and Caitlin’s brother Sam Blakely also repped the team.
All three once played a club game together for Glimmerburn, and as up-and-comers Olivia and Sam were rare cricket reps from the Central Otago dot of Ranfurly.
Caitlin debuted for the Sparks when she was just 16, emerging from the exciting cohort coming out of Dunedin's St Hilda’s College. She was part of a local groundswell that saw female cricket reignite in Dunedin — with direct flow-on effects for the Otago Sparks team.
Now, more than a decade on, the health studies master’s graduate signs off from cricket at 30, after an impressive career spanning 128 one-dayers (three of those were for New Zealand A), 97 T20s (three for the South in the North v South series, and one for New Zealand A), and a truckload of runs in her beloved blue and gold.
An innovative and strong right-hander, she's finished with 985 T20 career runs overall, including two fifties; and 2,407 one-day runs in List A cricket, including 15 fifties.
To put that in its true context, she retires as Otago Sparks’ fourth-most capped player and fourth-highest run scorer, after 14 seasons: a mainstay of the side.
Blakely’s highest score came in 2023 when she struck an unbeaten 78* against the Auckland Hearts.
She was also part of four Hallyburton Johnstone Shield-winning Sparks sides, contributing to some of the most successful periods in the team’s history.
Otago General Manager – Performance, Steve Martin praised Blakely’s contribution.
“Caitlin has been one of the Sparks’ most consistent performers over recent years," said Martin.
"The ultimate team person with an infectious enthusiasm, her presence in the side will be missed as she's been a key contributor to the fabric of the Sparks group.”
Long-time teammate and friend, WHITE FERN Polly Inglis shared more than 15 years of cricket with Blakely, from St Hilda’s Collegiate through to the Sparks.
“It feels surreal that this season we will be without the absolute Sparks, Otago and Maniototo legend, Caitlin," says Inglis.
“We’ve played together for over 15 years, walking out together for St Hilda’s and then the Sparks.
"She is the hardest-working person in any room, loyal, kind, and the ultimate teammate.
“Caitlin will leave a massive hole in the Sparks, both on and off the field.”
