Auckland have created history at the National U19 Men’s Tournament - picking up a hard-fought victory over Northern Districts, and a remarkable third consecutive U19 National title for their region.
Auckland capped off their campaign with a 83-run victory over previously unbeaten Northern Districts in the final, overturning their round-robin loss against ND earlier in the tournament.
After being in early trouble, Auckland rallied to post 192 from 32 overs, thanks to a gritty half-century from Selwin Sanjay (53).
The bowlers then took centre stage. Seam duo Jaskaran Sandhu (3-20) and Ben Lucas (3-13) ripped through the top order, before leg-spinner Harry Waite (3-30) cleaned up the tail to complete the job and secure the title.
Wellington secured third place with a thrilling 12-run victory over Central Districts, in a match dominated by two outstanding centuries.
Charlie Jackson produced a breathtaking innings for Wellington, smashing 104 from just 58 balls, including 16 boundaries, and was well supported by Lucas Henderson (43) as Wellington posted a formidable 266/5 from 31 overs.
Central Districts skipper Jacob Cotter responded in style with a brilliant 100 from 62 balls, taking his side to within touching distance. Despite Cotter’s heroics, Wellington held their nerve to claim the win and finish the tournament on a high.
Canterbury also finished their campaign on a high with a resounding 9-wicket victory over Otago in the 5th Place Playoff.
New Zealand Cricket would like to thank all players, support staff and supporters for making this tournament a memorable one.
