Women’s Twenty20 heating up

The competition will be fierce in the final round of the domestic women’s Twenty20 competition, with three teams pushing for a spot in the final.

The Otago Sparks and Canterbury Magicians square off in Dunedin today while the Northern Spirit and Auckland Hearts play in Auckland. The table-topping Central Hinds will play the Wellington Blaze on Sunday at the Allied Finance Basin Reserve.

The Hinds have a four point lead ahead of likely other finalists the Blaze and Hearts who both sit on 12 points. The Auckland Hearts must win today, being behind the Blaze currently on net run rate.

The Hinds go into the final round as favourites having won all four of their Twenty20 fixtures to date.

Hinds and White Fern batsman Sara McGlashan said it’s nice to be at the top of the table and the team will be pulling every trick out of the hat to ensure they secure a final spot. “We’ve got a well balanced team with three or four big hitters and consistent bowlers,” she said. “We’ve done the hard work and haven’t lost a game.”

There must be something in the water in the Central Districts area, as both the Hinds and the Central Stags are near the top of their respective Twenty20 competitions. “Go the Stags,” McGlashan laughed. “If they top the table then they get a home final, which will mean a home final for us too. Pukekura Park is lovely.”

The women’s final will be played as the certain raiser to the HRV cup final on January 31.
