Wizards defeat Otago to move top

State Canterbury Wizards moved to the top of the State Shield table after Shanan Stewart’s century helped his side to an eventful three-wicket win over State Otago Volts in Dunedin.

Canterbury completed a three-wicket win after reaching their revised target of 283 in the final over.

Stewart (pictured) shared a 159-run opening partnership with BLACKCAP Nathan Astle (57), and Chris Cairns added to three Otago wickets with a bombastic 48 off 33 balls, including four sixes.

Otago had set 293 from 47 overs, losing their last wicket with the last delivery of the innings, after knocks from Craig Gaffaney (80), Aaron Redmond (72) and Gareth Hopkins (48). Veteran spinner Paul Wiseman took four wickets for 55 runs and Cairns 3-27.

A delayed start had reduced the match to 49 overs, and the match was reduced to 47 overs each when weather halted play during the second over of the Canterbury innings.

The game stopped again during the Canterbury innings when Otago bowler Greg Todd was taken to hospital after suffering a leg injury during a delivery in his third over.

The target was reassessed and the match again shortened, with Canterbury given 45 overs to attain a new total to aim for.
