The breakthrough season continues for 20-year-old WHITE FERN Thamsyn Newton.
After having made an impressive Twenty20 International debut against Sri Lanka earlier season, the young Canterbury Magicians allrounder is now in line to make her ODI debut against Australia — after having today been named in both the WHITE FERNS ODI and Twenty20 International squads to take on the world number one Australians this month.

Newton has also been selected for her maiden ICC Women’s World Twenty20, her first trip abroad with the WHITE FERNS. The Women's World Twenty20 will be contested concurrently with the men’s World Twenty20 in India this March.

The much-anticipated return of the Rose Bowl, the symbol of trans-Tasman ODI competition between the two countries in women’s cricket, sees the WHITE FERNS host Australia in three ODIs at Mount Maunganui, starting on 20 February.
The Rose Bowl one-dayers are followed by three Twenty20 Internationals — the first two to be played at the Basin Reserve and the final T20i at New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park on 4 March before both teams depart for the Women’s World Twenty20 in India.
The ODIs have also been designated as International Women’s Championship (IWC) fixtures, each win worth two points on the IWC Qualifying Table for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017.

Australia currently leads the IWC table on 18 points and have named their T20 and ODI squads to tour New Zealand here.
The WHITE FERNS are healthily positioned in third spot, on 14 points — with a chance to overtake both Australia’s ‘Southern Stars’ and the West Indies in the upcoming Rose Bowl series.
Australia is also currently the world’s overall number one ranked team in the official ICC overall women’s rankings, which were introduced by the ICC last year and are calculated across all formats of the game. The WHITE FERNS, ranked third, have a chance to make further inroads on the table, with England holding second spot.

WHITE FERNS head coach Haidee Tiffen said it was exciting to name a strong squad for both formats — even with Northern Spirit’s top order powerhouse Natalie Dodd unavailable for the one-dayers due to work commitments.

“Katey Martin has had an outstanding domestic season for the Otago Sparks, especially in the one-day format. She’s averaging over 50 in domestic cricket and had a successful New Zealand A tour before that which has earned her a recall to the side.
“Katey provides us with an option at wicketkeeper for both the series against Australia and the World Twenty20, and we’re looking forward to having her back in the mix with the enthusiasm she brings to her cricket.”
Thamsyn Newton has been in strong form with both the bat and the ball for the Canterbury Magicians, while Northern Spirit allrounder Felicity Leydon-Davis returns to the WHITE FERNS’ T20 squad after overcoming a back injury over the past year.
