During their tour against England, the White Ferns will be walking out onto the grounds to a classic Kiwi tune in hope of boosting the morale within the side and in turn claim victory.
The White Ferns have chosen ‘Poi E’ as their song of choice. The 1984 classic has once again made a resurgence in the charts thanks to top grossing New Zealand film Boy by Taika Waititi. Both the film and the song have been given the nod from the team to help give them some inspiration while they travel around the English countryside.
White Ferns batsman Sara McGlashan said they chose the song because they are proud of their antipodean background. “We are using Poi E. Walking out to it is a nice way to embrace our Maori culture that’s unique to us being New Zealanders,” she said. “We all also loved Boy the movie and that revived the song.”
The girls loved the film so much that they used the hand signal for the East Coast Crazy Horses – Boy’s residential gang – as their victory salute during the recent ICC World Twenty20 competition in the West Indies. “Crazy horse was just our celebrating thing for the Windies. We need a new one for this tour!” McGlashan laughed.
The White Ferns play three Twenty20 matches and five ODIs against the English throughout July, with the first three games being broadcast around the UK.
