White Ferns look to ODIs

The White Ferns begin their three match ODI series against the England Women at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln tomorrow.

The team enters the 50 over format with high hopes, despite a disappointing Twenty20 series against the English.

While results didn’t reflect as much, there was a lot to like about the young New Zealand team during the shorter format. Every match saw a marked improvement, with only experience separating the two sides in the final two Tweny20s.

The top order batting line-up in particular is an exciting prospect, with Suzie Bates, Sara McGlashan and Amy Satterthwaite all showing signs of coming into form.

Three of the more experienced members of the side, they stepped up in the final Twenty20 and seemed comfortable against the England bowling attack.

Younger members of the team like Kate Broadmore (20) and Morna Nielsen (22) have been a revelation and excelled in recent matches.  Exciting considering the pair have only played a handful of games between them.

With a relatively new group of players, the side has now had time to gel together and become more familiar with one another’s game.  New captain Suzie Bates has settled into her leadership role and is developing with every game.
There’s a lot to be encouraged by.

However there is no doubting that England are a world-class side. Current world champions, they have a great mix of young and old players and will be full of confidence ahead of the ODIs.

Both teams have said they are better equipped for the 50 over game and are looking forward to the new format.

It will be an intriguing series, with many expecting England to be too good, but it’s important to remember one thing – this is an exciting Ferns team who are only going to continue improving.
