White Ferns focus on the future

This weekend 23 of New Zealand’s elite women’s cricketers will put their skills into practice at a special training camp at the Lincoln High Performance Centre.

The three day camp, from Friday to Sunday, focuses on the build up to the women’s domestic and international season.

This is the first time the White Ferns squad has come together since their winter tour to England. White Ferns coach Gary Stead said it’s a good chance for all the players to come together and assess what needs to be done to be successful during the summer.

“We had a camp planned the weekend after the earthquake but it was cancelled because Lincoln was untenable at the time,” he said. “It’s a chance for us to look individually and collectively at where we are currently and put plans in action for the direction forward.”

The women will also be working along side specialist coaches including John Wright, Dipak Patel, Vaughn Johnson and Jason Mills. “We will be playing a lot of scenario games to learn and grow on past experiences,” Stead said.

The women’s domestic season starts in December, while the White Ferns have an international series against the trans-Tasman rivals between Christmas and New Year and again in mid-February.

The White Ferns last met Australia in the ICC World Twenty20 final, where New Zealand went down on the last ball. “We have a good squad of 23 players, 21 of whom have represented New Zealand in the past so we are building some good depth and competition,” he said. “Watch out for them all, they are all quality players.”
