The BLACKCAPS captain talks about the loss to Bangladesh, their batting problems and how well Banglesdesh played.
On today’s performance…
“I think it is similar to the first game where we just lost wickets at crucial times. From being 50 for one and having a good partnership to losing three for 12, then losing another clump of wickets - it is always going to hurt you.
“The Bangladesh spinners bowled exceptionally well and kept putting pressure on us. To only score 170 wasn’t enough on that wicket and losing those key wickets was crucial.”

On improving for the next match…
“We know the answer, we have just got to actually perform and that is what we haven’t done in this series so far. We haven’t got continuous partnerships. The guys who have got to 30 and 40 haven’t kicked on to get the hundreds and that is simply the reason. In one day cricket you need to put big scores on the board through good partnerships and having wickets in hand at the end. We haven’t done that in both games.”
On the struggling middle order…
“We have still got quality players there, Ross Taylor at four, Grant Elliott has had match winning performances before and myself. Obviously the likes of Scott Styris is handy to have in those situations. It’s all about getting the job done, its irrelevant who is there, the people have to step up and make sure they do it.”
On the level of competition…
“We always knew it was going to be a tough test coming over here and not having any practice matches before coming up against the Bangladesh team that is good in their own conditions. Most teams in their own conditions are going to be tough. Whilst we don’t want to be in the situation, we respect how good Bangladesh are.”
“Every game you play you want to win, regardless of the opposition. When you play poorly and you lose, people have a right to be negative about the performance. We have got a couple of days to turn it around and that is the good thing about international cricket, you play so often you get an opportunity to rectify your mistakes and that is what we have in two days time.”
On your own batting…
“I have got to learn how to hit full tosses, that is a couple in a row now. It is disappointing, my role as captain is to lead from the front with the performance and that is what I have tried to do my whole captaincy.”.
On the Bangladesh bowling…
“They did a very good job. Any time you are restrict a team to 170 it is a fantastic performance by a bowling team. They should be proud of their effort.”
On the favourite to take out the Series…
“It irrelevant who is the favourite or not, it is who goes out and wins the games and that is what we have to do. There is not point in trying to preempt what is going to happen - it is up to us to lift our performance and win the next game.”
