Kane Williamson became the second youngest ODI captain when leading the BLACKCAPS in the first match of the series. Tatenda Taibu was the youngest being 20 years 342 days when he captained Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in 2004. At 21 years 332 days Williamson slips in just ahead of Waqar Younis who was 21 years 354 days old when he first skippered Pakistan. Stephen Fleming comes in at tenth on the list being 23 years 258 days old when he first led the Black Caps in 1997.
BJ Watling achieved his highest ODI score in the first ODI and in doing so became just the fifth BLACKCAP to score a half-century in his first innings against the West Indies. His current team mate Martin Guptill has the highest score, the 122 not out he scored on his ODI debut. The others to have fifty in their first innings againt the West Indies are Geoff Howarth, Mark Greatbatch and Jamie How. Watling went on to further improve his best in his next innings finishing with 72 not out.
Andre Russell was just the third West Indian to claim four wickets in his first match against New Zealand. Only Bernard Julien has better figures on debut finishing with four for 27 in the first ever ODI between the two teams at The Oval during the 1975 World Cup.
Wins have been hard to come by for New Zealand in the West Indies. The win in the third ODI was just their fifth in twenty one matches in the Caribbean and was their first match at Basseterre in St Kitts.
New Zealand looked to be heading for a record win in this match but a record last wicket partnership carried the West Indies to 161, with the BLACKCAPS finally winning by 88 runs. The BLACKCAPS record winning margin was achieved in the final of the Natwest Trophy at Lord's in 2004 when they prevailed over the West Indies by 107 runs.
When Chris Gayle was dismissed for eleven in the third match it ended a run of three consecutive half-centuries against the BLACKCAPS in ODIs. He joined the illustrious trio of Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Brian Lara who had also managed this feat previously. No player from either team has managed to score more than three successive half-centuries.
Gayle hasn't always been so prolific against the New Zealand side. In his first seventeen matches against them he scored just 390 runs at 22.94.
Nathan Astle is the only BLACKCAP to achieve three consecutive fifties, although Watling went close to joining him, but was dismissed for forty at Basseterre after having passed fifty in his previous two innings in Kingston.
Trent Boult became the one hundred and seventy fourth player to represent the BLACKCAPS in ODIs. He celebrated a winning start by taking the first and last wickets in the West Indies innings.
Ross Taylor became just the second BLACKCAP to score centuries in consecutive ODI innings. In his case though the second century came two hundred and sixty three days after the first. He hit 119 in the third ODI against Zimbabwe on 25th October 2011 and didn't play another ODI for New Zealand until the fourth match of the current series. Mark Greatbatch is the only player to achieve this feat previously hitting centuries against England at Leeds and The Oval in 1990.
This was Taylor's sixth ODI century and came in his one hundredth innings. It was just the fifth hundred scored for the BLACKCAPS against the West Indies. Taylor has taken a liking to the West Indian bowling ATTACK, with scores of 51 not out, 75, 48 not out and 110 in successive innings against them.
Kyle Mills passed Chris Harris to move into second place on the list of highest wicket-takers for New Zealand in ODIs during the last match of the series. He now has 205 wickets but has a way to go to catch up with Daniel Vettori on 274 wickets.
Sunil Narine has proved to be the difference between the two teams and his figures of five for 27 in the last match of the series were the best for the West Indies against the BLACKCAPS, bettering the five for 41 by Viv Richards at Dunedin back in 1997.
