Daniel Vettori praised Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series winners Australia but saw the BLACKCAPS’ record-breaking win at Jade Stadium as the start of something special.
For the second time in a week, the BLACKCAPS ran in over 300 runs chasing a massive total. But this time, they set a new world mark.
Their two-wicket win came with an innings of 332 for eight, surpassing Australia’s 331 for seven.
Vettori hit the winning runs, but Scott Styris’ 101 and Brendon McCullum’s 50 from only 25 balls were vital.
Completing his three-game stint as captain, Vettori told the crowd: “Congratulations to Ricky (Ponting) and the boys. “They’ve proved they are the number one side in the world.
Vettori also expressed the belief that the breathtaking victory was the boost the team needed at the start of the season.
“It’s been a privilege to be in this game and we hope it’ll be the start of better things to come,” he said.
The spinner was full of praise for the tournament, which he hoped would continue to be an annual fixture.
“The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy is a great format and it’s something we’re getting to really like.”
Australia captain Ponting agreed, stating: “I think the fans have seen a couple of great games of cricket and both teams should be congratulated. Let’s hope we can do it again soon.”
