Vettori reclaims top ODI bowling spot

BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori had reclaimed the world number one spot on the ICC ODI bowling rankings after impressive performances in the recent ICC Champions Trophy and series against Pakistan in the UAE.

Vettori moved up from third spot and has replaced fellow BLACKCAP Kyle Mills who has moved down to fifth on the table.

The rankings are a s sophisticated moving average. Players are rated on a scale of 0 to 1000 points.  Vettori is currently sitting on 719 points but his career best 790 came at the end of the home series against England in 2008.

Test rankings outcome

New Zealand hosts Pakistan in three Tests knowing a series victory will see the sides swap places in the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship.

Daniel Vettori’s team sits seventh, four rankings points and one place behind the tourists, ahead of Tests in Dunedin, Wellington and Napier.

Should New Zealand complete a whitewash, it will close the gap on fifth-placed England to 18 points. A 2-0 triumph will only leave the BLACKCAPS a point worse off, and a one-match win two further back.

Any of those scenarios could see Pakistan drop to eighth, depending on how West Indies fares in Australia.

However, the hosts could also suffer that fate should Mohammad Yousuf’s men prevail, again depending on the series Down Under.

A Pakistan whitewash will leave it 12 points behind England, 2-0 15 in arrears, and 2-1 or 1-0 17 back.

A drawn series will halve the gap between Pakistan and New Zealand, but leave the door open for West Indies to overtake both.
