Vettori laments soft dismissals

Throwing wickets away and the inability to learn from earlier mistakes have frustrated BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori.

“Unfortunately the same mistakes as the previous two games,” said Vettori.

“ It’s really hard to expand on it because it’s just about not putting enough runs on the board, losing wickets at crucial times and putting ourselves under far too much pressure and when you do that against Australia you get your self in trouble,” he pinpointed.

“If you look at most of the dismissals they are relatively soft dismissals, they are just poor mistakes and whether it is that mental shift from the aggressiveness, the accumulation, I’m not too sure but they are mistakes that shouldn’t happen constantly and they have in these last three games.

“I don’t think we can be happy with our overall performance. I think we have fought pretty hard with the ball but we have just put ourselves under too much pressure with the bat.

The BLACKCAPS have reshuffled the batting order throughout the series and are still struggling to find the right line.

“It’s also about doing the job and the batting order that was there today didn’t do the job. I thought we got off to a fantastic start, it was great to see McCullum and Guptill play with freedom and put a lot of bad balls away but in the end same story we put ourselves under pressure with a loss of wickets.” Vettori added.

With the fifth and final One-Day International match in the series a dead rubber it is likely that Nathan McCullum will get a run.

“We will definitely look at Nathan McCullum coming in to it. Westpac Stadium is a bigger ground and that allows Nathan to come in to the mix a little bit more.

“We want to end the series on a high. 3-2 is not the result we wanted but it will be a start on the road to improvement hopefully.” Vettori concluded.
