Vettori and Brownlie set new record

STATISTICS: A summary of the statistics and milestones following the first Test against Australia in Brisbane.

New Zealand entered this Test with a combined tally of 312 caps to 380 by Australia.  Dan Vettori led the way with 105 caps followed by Chris Martin (62), Brendon McCullum (58) and Ross Taylor (31).  Australia had a similar pattern with Ricky Ponting having played 156 tests followed by Michael Clarke (74), Mike Hussey (64) and Brad Haddin (37).

Australia had three players making their Test debuts, the first time they have had this many since the 1st Test against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2008-09 when Phil Hughes, Marcus North and Ben Hilfenhaus were awarded their baggy greens.   However six of their side were playing their first test against the BLACKCAPS and a seventh had played just a single test against them.  Four of the BLACKCAPS were playing their maiden test against the Australians.

This was the ninth Test match between the two countries in Brisbane and Australia now has a seven wins to one advantage with one match drawn.   New Zealand's only win came during the series victory in 1985-86 with the BLACKCAPS winning the first match of the series by an innings and 41 runs with Richard Hadlee claiming 15 wickets in the match and Martin Crowe and John F Reid scoring centuries.

New Zealand have only played Australia three times at Hobart drawing two and losing one match. Australia have a lowest score there of 400 and have declared twice well in excess of 500.

Dean Brownlie and Dan Vettori added 158 for New Zealand's 6th wicket in the first innings to beat the old record of 126 scored by Vettori and Brendon McCullum at Wellington in 2009-10.

When he reached 23 during the Australian first innings Ricky Ponting became the sixth Australian batsman to reach 1,000 runs against the BLACKCAPS.   Allan Border leads the way with 1,500 runs while Justin Langer, David Boon, Steve Waugh and Greg Chappell are the others to have reached this mark.

James Pattinson is the eigth Australian to take a five wicket bag in his first Test Match against New Zealand.  He is the 4th to do so on what was also his Test debut after Geoff Dymock, Tony Dodemaide and Simon Cook.

Michael Clarke scored his fourth Test century against New Zealand.   Only Allan Border with five has scored more for the Australians against the BLACKCAPS.

Chris Martin scored the 31st duck of his Test career but remains fifth on the all-time list, well short of Courtney Walsh's record of 43.

Ross Taylor recorded his first Test duck in what was his 59th innings.   Only Aravinda de Silva (75) and AB de Villiers (78) have taken more innings to record their first duck.
