University Oval Set for First ODI

Monday is a very special day for the people of Otago, the BLACKCAPS take on Bangladesh in Dunedin at the University Oval in what will be the first ODI for the southern venue.

The last time a one day international was played in Dunedin was five years ago at Carisbrook, between the BLACKCAPS and South Africa. The University Oval has already hosted the first Test between the BLACKCAPS and Pakistan this summer and Ross Dykes, Otago Cricket CEO hopes the result will be the same for the ODI.

“We are confident our new ground will lend itself to a high scoring and exciting match. The shortish straight boundaries, combined with a true pitch, encourage aggressive stroke play and boundaries galore,” he said. “The people of Dunedin have shown good support for Test matches at University Oval and we are confident they will turn out in good numbers to enjoy the festive atmosphere in the relaxed surrounds.

“With a promising weather forecast it shapes up as another step forward in the development of University Oval as an international venue. The BLACKCAPS are unbeaten at University Oval and with our own Brendon McCullum leading the charge this record should remain intact.”

University Oval head groundsman Tom Tamati has been working hard at preparing the pitch before the big game. “Really good weather during the lead into Monday’s match has meant that the wicket is looking great, the grass is in good condition and has been nicely rolled into the wicket,” he said. “The pitch should provide both teams with every opportunity to put a spectacle worthy of the first ODI at the University Oval.”

A large crowd is expected at University Oval and the local police will be on hand, to keep an eye on the crowd.  "We want people to have a great day out and enjoy themselves in a safe environment within the bounds of the law,” North Dunedin Senior Sgt Gavin Briggs said. "This is the first one-day international at the University Oval so we're keen, along with other city agencies, for Dunedin to showcase it's newest international cricket ground and local fans in a positive light."
