Tuffey returns to BLACKCAPS for World Cup

Two years after being sidelined with a torn tendon in his right shoulder, State Northern Knights opening bowler Daryl Tuffey has been included in the BLACKCAPS squad of 15 to compete in the World Cup in the West Indies in March and April.

The right-arm out-swing bowler has also been included in the 13-man squad for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series against Australia which starts in Wellington on Friday.

The full World Cup squad is:

Stephen Fleming (c)
Shane Bond
James Franklin
Peter Fulton *
Mark Gillespie
Michael Mason *
Brendon McCullum
Craig McMillan
Jacob Oram
Jeetan Patel
Scott Styris
Ross Taylor
Daryl Tuffey
Daniel Vettori
Lou Vincent

* Fulton and Mason have not been included in the Chappell Hadlee series and will be available for their respective provinces.

John Bracewell, coach of the BLACKCAPS, said that Tuffey’s ability to take the ball away from the right-handed batsmen made him the ideal replacement for the injured Kyle Mills.

“It has been a long journey back for Daryl from such a serious injury, but the selectors have been impressed by his performances and are satisfied that he is ready to once again play international cricket. What has impressed with the State Northern Knights is his economy rate of 4.54, which is very good for a bowler who opens the innings and also bowls at the death,” he said.

Tuffey made his One-Day International debut for the BLACKCAPS against Zimbabwe in September 2000 and played the last of his 76 matches before injury ruled him out of international cricket. He has taken 90 wickets at an average of 29.92.
