Taylor and Patel star as BLACKCAPS close in on 300

The BLACKCAPS are 283 for eight at the end of day one in their three day warm up match against Sri Lanka Development XI at Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground, Colombo.

Captain Daniel Vettori won the toss at the NCC ground in Colombo, and had no hesitation in seeking more batting practice for his side ahead of next week’s first Test.

It was a shaky start for the BLACKCAPS, losing Tim McIntosh in the first over and Daniel Flynn after five to be 20 for two.

Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor steadied the innings with an 89 run partnership before Guptill went for 54.

The in form Taylor went on to get 75, hitting nine fours and two sixes before being caught LBW – the fifth batsmen of the innings to be trapped in front.

Craig Cumming, Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori went cheaply as the BLACKCAPS crumbled to 172 for seven.

Jacob Oram and Jeetan Patel started to turn things around with a gritty 61 run partnership before Oram he was dismissed for 42.

Patel, batting at number nine, kicked on the bring up his half century and remains unbeaten on 68.  He will resume tomorrow with Iain O’Brien who is 9 not out.

Legbreak bowler Seekkuge Prasanna was the best of the Sri Lankan XI with figures of 3 for 66, while Test paceman Dhamika Prasad picked up 2 for 43.
