Sri Lanka beat England by eight wickets in the third one-day international at Chester-le-Street to wrap up the five-match series.
England batted first and scored 261-7. However, much of its scoring impetus came only in the last 10 overs when it posted 89 runs.
England reached 62 in 13 overs before Strauss was trapped leg before wicket by Chaminda Vaas for 32. Marcus Trescothick followed two overs later when bowled by Vaas for 36.
Ian Bell stayed until the last ball of the 49th over while scoring 77 to contribute the highest total among the England batsmen.
Paul Collingwood hit 33 and Jamie Dalrymple scored 35. Geraint Jones was 22 not out at the completion of the 50 overs. Vaas ended with 2-38 from nine overs and Lasith Malinga took 2-50 from 10.
Sri Lanka lost Sanath Jayasuriya for 23 when he was run out with the scored on 38 in the sixth over.
Run outs seemed the only likely method of removing the batsmen as England's bowlers were wayward.
Upul Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene added 87 runs for the second wicket off 69 balls before Tharanga fell to Dalrymple for 41. Jayawardene's 50 was scored off 40 balls.
However, any hopes England had of a late breakthrough were blunted when Kumar Sangakkara proved a firm ally for his captain and they shared an unbroken stand of 140 runs to secure the win easily in the 43rd over.
Jayawardene, who has enjoyed a marvellous tour, was unbeaten on 126. It was his seventh ODI century and he took 104 balls for his hundred.
Sangakkara was 58 not out with Dalrymple the only successful bowler for England taking 1-40 from nine overs.
Compounding England's frustration was a knee injury suffered by Kevin Pietersen.
