BLACKCAPS fast bowler Tim Southee has his sights set on a series win against the much fancied Australian Test team.
“It always is tough against Aussie, everyone seems to lift when you play the Aussies so if we can do that again and take some momentum out of the last One-Dayers going forward into the Test” an upbeat Southee said.
The young fast bowler know that the key to success is taking regular wickets which is no mean feat when you run down their batting line up. Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting occupy top 10 spots in the ICC Test batting rankings with Michael Hussey and Simon Katich featuring in the top 20.
“We are going to have to play well to compete and to win so I guess it’s going to start with the bowlers and have to take 20 wickets somehow and hopefully we can do that.”
“In Test cricket in general you have to hit your areas and hit it for as longer time as you can and that will go a long way towards getting 20 wickets,” he said.
Southee is far form overawed by the challenge and knows that the team will need to at their best if they are to beat the Australians.
“It’s always good to perform against Australia and to perform against them in a Test would be great and hopefully we can do that.
One area Southee is hoping to improve on is his batting. He make an incredible start to his Test career when he blasted 77 off just 40 deliveries against England in his first match but his average has since dropped to 15.87.
When asked about his demotion to number 11 in the One-Day team he quipped, “It shows the strength of the batting line up.”
On a more serious note he added, “You can’t go any further down and only go up from there and I’ll keep working on it. It’s not going to happen over night so hopefully in the next year or so I can work on it and slowly work my way up."
