Southee relishing fresh challenge

Despite having played 50 Tests for New Zealand, Tim Southee is yet to play a Test in South Africa.

The 27-year-old is relishing the fresh challenge of taking on the Proteas in their own conditions after what was a tough series for the bowlers in Zimbabwe. Southee is also well aware of the BLACKCAPS past performances in South Africa.

“Our history here in South Africa isn’t great and we’re looking to come over here and perform and continue to grow as a side overseas.”

The pace spearhead labelled team growth as a key objective for the entire BLACKCAPS playing group.

“We’ve slowly increased but we are still looking to improve as a side especially away from home so this is a big series for that.”

The team has been working hard since arriving in Africa prior to the Zimbabwe series and Southee says it was particularly pleasing to see some of that hard work pay off in Bulawayo led by Neil Wagner.

“For Neil to be the leading wicket taker in the series just shows you how far he’s come as a player. It’s never easy when you are in and out of the side. But he’s really grown another leg in the last couple of years and he’s getting the rewards for that effort.”

BLACKCAPS coach Mike Hesson has hinted at changes to the playing XI for the first Test in Durban and Southee believes one of the side’s advantages is a healthy competition for places.

“I think one of the strengths is that we are all a tight group, we are all good mates on and off the field, so it’s a healthy environment.

“Matt Henry and Doug Bracewell are quality bowlers sitting there waiting their turn. It’s healthy competition amongst the group. It’s a good thing to have pushing guys at training and making sure we are all on top of our game.”

The first Test against South Africa starts at Kingsmead on Friday night at 8pm (NZT) and will be broadcast live on SKY SPORT and Radio Sport.
