Hannah Rowe at just 19 enters her second international summer

Selectors spring WHITE FERNS surprise

There’s an experienced look to the WHITE FERNS One-Day and Twenty20 squads to take on Sri Lanka, who arrive for their maiden bilateral tour of New Zealand later this month.

Wellington Blaze allrounder Liz Perry returns to both the One-Day International and Twenty20 squad, having last played for the WHITE FERNS in 2012. The 27-year-old played overseas for a period and forced her way back into the squad through strong domestic performances last summer.

Dual cricket and hockey international Liz Perry last represented the WHITE FERNS in 2012

There’s plenty of youth in the side, too, 19-year-old Hannah Rowe named in both squads, and Canterbury Magicians allrounder Thamsyn Newton in line to make her debut after having been named in the Twenty20 squad for the first time.

Newton and Wellington Blaze’s 14-year-old legspinner Amelia Kerr were named to train with the WHITE FERNS in the build-up camp for the summer.

WHITE FERNS Coach Haidee Tiffen says the team was excited for its first challenge of the summer.

“This is a really important tour for us. We need a strong performance at home to set the tone for the rest of the summer, and to make sure we get those ICC Women’s Championship points.

“It’s great to have Liz back in the team. She knows what international cricket is all about, and her form for the Blaze in the summer showed how hungry she was to get back in the team."

On her newcomer, Tiffen says it's an exciting opportunity for Newton to get a taste of international cricket, and she’ll also benefit from training with the squad. "She’s an incredibly talented player, and this will only aid her development.”

A New Zealand A squad to face Sri Lanka and the WHITE FERNS in warm-up games was also named today.
