Record stand seals Magicians win

A record third-wicket partnership by Amy Satterthwaite and Haidee Tiffen guided State Canterbury Magicians to an eight-wicket victory in the opening match of their State League defence against State Northern Spirit.

White Ferns left-hander Satterthwaite made an unbeaten 95 and Magicians and White Ferns captain Tiffen contributed 46 not out in an unbroken 168-run third wicket stand for victory.

Half-centuries by former Magician Mandi Godliman and Nicola Browne put the Spirit in a strong position at Mt Maunganui’s Blake Park.

Beth McNeil claimed three wickets, but Northern had three to spare by the end of their allocated 50 overs, making 185 after they were sent into bat.

Browne then took two early wickets, but a provincial record stand by the title holders' international duo eclipsed their hosts’ total of with more than 14 overs to spare.

Sunday's game between the sides was abandoned after Canterbury's innings. They were dismissed for 1887 with one over to spare.

Tiffen made 68, while England spinner Charlotte Russell claimed three wickets for ND.
