Tim Southee's hat-trick in New Zealand's Twenty20 cricket victory over Pakistan in The National Bank Series in Auckland today was a first not just the fast bowler, but also for his skipper.
"I don't think I've ever played in a game where a guy's got a hat-trick," Ross Taylor said.
Southee, 22, was named man of the match after finishing with five for 18 from his four overs.
The Northern Knights seamer said the hat-trick was his first at senior level.
"I've had a couple at school level, but they don't really count," he said.
"It was pleasing."
The feat came in a nine-ball stretch during which Southee took his five wickets without conceding a run.
His victims were Younis Khan, caught by Dean Brownlie in the outfield, opener Mohammad Hafeez, who edged to wicketkeeper Peter McGlashan, and Umar Akmal, who was given out leg before.
However, replays showed Akmal had got an inside edge, and Southee agreed that fortune had been on his side.
"You need a bit of luck in Twenty20 and I managed to get that."
