You’ve become the second WHITE FERN to reach 3000 runs, proud moment?
Yeah it was, I was out batting and there was a round of applause. I thought, I’m not close to fifty, and thought maybe we were on 100 runs and then looked up and it was on the scoreboard - it was a nice moment. I guess you play for as long as you can. You hope you’re scoring runs when you’re a top order batter. It was nice to reach that milestone when not many other players have.
Did you know prior to the game/tour that you were approaching 3000 ODI runs?
I did know I had scored 2000 odd, but I didn’t actually know this series was a chance to reach 3000. The odd time I do look at stats, as sometimes it is just a bit of extra motivation but I hadn’t recently, so I wasn’t aware of it.
A milestone that not necessarily you had targeted at any stage of your career?
No, not really. I had been aware of all of Debbie Hockley’s records as she is one of the greats, you know and hear about her records. But I can’t say the run scoring is a milestone that I have targeted. I just want to score runs.
To take you back, do you remember who you scored your first runs against, and how you scored it?
I’m pretty sure it was against Jhulan Goswami. and it was a nick through the slip (laughs)s. I think that was my first runs.
Do you know what year that was?
That was 2006 I think, at Lincoln.
If you had to guess, what shot have you scored the most runs from?
I’d like to say through the offside, through cover area is where I have scored the majority of my runs. Hopefully it’s a bit more 360 these days. But when I started it was definitely the offside, cover- cover point.
What is your favourite innings amongst all those runs?
There was probably one innings which was a bit of a turning point. In the 2009 World Cup against India, we had to win to not be knocked out. It wasn’t a semi-final but it was a really important pool game. I played quite a different innings for me at the time and was really patient. I ended up not out and it was kind of a defining moment of the way to play that situation. Probably matured a lot from that innings so that was probably one that sticks in my memory.
Any target for how many more runs you would like to achieve?
Well I have seen a list of the other nine players, and Charlotte Edwards is of something like 5900 runs and I would have to play another ten years to get that. If I play for another three or four years, who knows? 4000 I guess is the next target. Debbie Hockley’s record, if I get pretty close to that I would be pretty proud.
