NZA humbled by South Africa

View ScoreCard

South Africa have finished pool play in the One-Day component of the Emerging Players Tournament unbeaten after their comfortable five wicket win over New Zealand A.

New Zealand A put on 220 for nine after being put into bat with South Africa reaching the target with more than 10 overs to spare.

Dean Brownlie’s classy 82 off 96 deliveries was the only contribution of note in an otherwise sorry looking scorecard.

Brownlie has been the standout performer throughout the tournament with scores of 55, 21 and 56 in the Twent20 round robin, before cracking an unbeaten 116 in the opening 50-over match against Australia.

New ball bowler Craig Alexander was the chief destroyer taking five for 53.

The South African run chase was set up by CJ DeVilliers who hit a brisk 65 off 57 while Ryan Bailey finished the inning off with a well paced 72 off 83 deliveries.

Young Otago spinner Nick Beard continued to show some promise with two for 57 of his full complement of 10 overs with Colin de Grandhomme taking two for 28 off five.

New Zealand A who beat South Africa to finish third in the Twenty20 competition will play-off for the same spot in the 50-over section against AIS on Saturday.  South Africa and India will contest the final on the same day.

The result sees the New Zealand A side finish above Australian Institute of Sport in third spot while South Africa and India will contest the final
