White Ferns strike bowler Nicola Browne was today named as the women’s player of the tournament at the conclusion of the ICC World Twenty20 2010 at Kensington Oval, Barbados.
Browne was the unanimous choice of a select group of experts following a wonderful event for the Northern Spirit 26-year-old.
The seam bowler’s 11 wickets were more than any other player in the tournament and she enjoyed the outstanding average of just 8.00 and an economy-rate of 4.40, which helped her side to its second successive final.
Browne is the second woman to be named player of the tournament at an ICC World Twenty20 event, following on from England’s Claire Taylor, who picked up the award at the conclusion of last year’s event.
During their deliberations, the members of the panel discussed several names, highlighting such players as the Australia duo of Alex Blackwell and Shelley Nitschke, as well as Diana David of India and West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor. But they felt Browne’s ability to take early wickets and score late runs as well as her all-round attitude made her the stand-out performer of the tournament.
