Nicol - Plenty to pay for

Opening batsman Rob Nicol accepts that it’s disappointing tomorrow’s match won’t be for a series victory, but maintains the side is as determined as ever to pick up a win.

New Zealand will play the fifth and final ODI against the West Indies at Warner Park in St Kitts having already lost the series, but there’s still a lot on the line.

As Ross Taylor put it, 3-2 sounds a lot better than 4-1. Nicol is almost scornful of the term ‘dead rubber’ and assures us that he and the rest of the BLACKCAPS will do everything they can for victory.

“It’s everything (winning). Every time you play for the BCs (BLACKCAPS) you’re wanting to win and I think that’s just common knowledge within our group,” the 29 year-old said.

“Every time I play for the BCs I’m wanting to do as well as I possibly can for the side.

“The reality of it is that pretty much the whole series I’ve got myself into a position to be able to push on for the side and got out. I just want to believe in myself and be positive in the way that I play and hopefully things will come of it.”

They’re fighting words and a clear sign that the final match won’t be taken lightly from New Zealand’s point of view.

It will be important that the side continue to show the gradual improvement they have made all tour and finish on a high ahead of the Test series which starts July 20th.

It also presents a chance for players to show the coaches just what they’re capable of. For some players it will be their last opportunity for some time and competition for spots is always an incentive to do well.

Despite showing good from in the past two ODIs Nicol admits that there is always pressure to contribute. However he tries to avoid getting worked up over such things and places a lot importance on simply taking pleasure from being out there.

“In this day and age you’ve got critiquing from every point of view. If you’re not positive yourself you’re never going to get any enjoyment out of the game and I think that at the end of the day that’s what we’re here for,” Nicol said.

“I’m a realist and I know time is of the essence and I need to start producing scores of 100 plus for the side and being in partnerships.

“I’m really hoping that I can forge something with someone in the group tomorrow.”

If his plan comes to fruition it would be a huge help to the BLACKCAPS cause. Apart from Taylor’s century last match the top-order has been an area of concern.

With a now fully fit top-order there’s no reason for them not to perform. Tomorrow will be their last chance to really push on to the big score they’ve been searching for.

Success with the bat, combined with another good showing with the ball from Tim Southee and company would go a long way to an important victory.

Series on the line or not, we know they have the motivation.
