The New Zealand Emerging Players took first innings honours in their two-day match against England A at the Burt Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.
After declaring on their overnight score of 321 for seven the Emerging Players dimissed the visitors for 277.
England A got off to a good start with openers Stephen Moore and Robert Key putting on 59 before Key was caught by Jeet Raval off Te Ahu Davis for a run-a-ball 31.
Moore went on to reach 75 before being before dismissed in exactly the same way as his opening partner with Ben Scott the only other player to reach a half century being 53 not out at the end of play.
There were useful contributions from Eoin Morgan (31), Gareth Batty (35) and Sajid Mahmood (29) but a more substantial innings was required from one of the batsman to overhaul the New Zealand target.
Pace man Davies was the best of the attack for the home side taking three for 61.
Left-arm spinner Beard, fresh from his stint with the New Zealand Under 19’s, proved he can perform at this level picking up two scalps. Mitchell McClenaghan and Brandon Hiini also picked up two apiece.
The teams meet again on play another two-day match at the same venue on Wednesday before the England A team head down to Queenstown for the first Test match against New Zealand A which begins on Sunday.
DAY 1: Emerging Players reach 321 after Brodie ton
The New Zealand Emerging Players have amassed 321 for seven on day one of their two day match against the England Lions at Burt Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.
An opening stand of 101 between captain Tim McIntosh and Josh Brodie got the home side off to a solid start.
Left-handed Brodie went on to reach 124 and put the Emerging players into a strong position.
A number of the other batman got starts but were unable to kick on as the Lion’s picked up regular wickets.
Medium-pacer Jonathan Trott was the pick of the attack taking three for 31 with all-rounder Luke Wright picking up two for 56.
Brandon Hiini (9) and Te Ahu Davies (26) were not-out at the end of play.
