New Zealand Cricket Skills Challenge

The New Zealand Cricket Skills Challenge will bring a new level of fun and competition for year seven and eight students throughout the country.

The ‘New Zealand Cricket Skills Challenge’ builds on the interest and progressive skill development programmes introduced through the MILO Have-A-Go Cricket and MILO Kiwi Cricket initiatives.

The high-quality, easy-to-use teacher resource allows students to test themselves in a number of fundamental cricket skill areas against a set of easily measurable standards and achieve awards in recognition of their level of performance.

Each lesson is accompanied with appropriate teaching points, drills, assessment activities and recording schedules.

It fits easily into the ‘Health and Physical Education’ programmes, covers curriculum objectives for both Level 3 and 4, and can be used in conjunction with the current ‘Small Ball’ and ‘Striking’ units, or it could be used as a stand-alone module.

Most of the fundamental movement skills that are taught and tested – throwing, catching, striking – are applicable and easily transferable to a wide range of sports. Cricket is the theme, skill development is the focus.

Teachers require only limited cricket knowledge to organise and run the preliminary drills and testing activities and only a minimal amount of equipment is needed, as all the drills and activities have been set up to run using readily accessible MILO Kiwi Cricket equipment and balls.

For each challenge students record their performance and an aggregate score determines their reward - a bronze, silver or gold certificate.

The ‘New Zealand Cricket Skills Challenge’ can also be used as a competition between with students, classes and schools.
