Whangarei Boys High School batsman Henry Cooper clouted an outstanding 93 against Christchurch Boys High School in the Gillete Cup yesterday (Friday 11 December) but it wasn’t enough for a knockout against the southern side in a nail-biting finish which went down to the wire.
The 16-year old Cooper didn’t even realise he had made it to the 90s when his wicket fell. “I thought I was on 70 and I was disappointed that I didn’t hit the last two balls for six,” he said.
Cooper has cricket running through his veins – he seems to have inherited the talent from father, Barry Cooper, who played First Class cricket for Northern Districts during the 1980s and early 90s.
Cooper said he wants to go one better than his dad and make it into the BLACKCAPS. “I want to beat dad at everything,” Cooper laughed.
Although his long term goal is to make it to the international stage, for now he is focusing on scoring as many runs as possible for Whangarei at the Gillette Cup. “I want to help the team as much as I can and hopefully we can get some wins at the tournament.”
