The first lot of youngsters involved with the MILO cricket programmes will take to the park and show New Zealand what they can do with the bat and ball today.
Over 80 young cricketers will take to University Oval during the lunch break of the ODI between the BLACKCAPS and Bangladesh playing modified pairs cricket.
The participants are from a range of primary schools from around the Otago area and it’s a great chance for them to experience what it’s like to play on the international ground.
Otago Cricket development officer Nathan King said it’s encouraging to see the calibre of the youngsters coming through the MILO programmes. “The “MILO Kids on the Ground” initiative is a fantastic opportunity for our young cricketers to experience playing cricket at an ODI venue,” he said.
MILO cricket programmes have been in action in New Zealand for 10 years and its goal is to introduce young Kiwis in schools and junior clubs to the sport. It teaches young players the fundamental skills of cricket and parents and teachers are also encouraged to get involved with the coaching side of things to assist participants with development.
In Otago alone more than 500 boys and girls are enrolled in the MILO Programmes, which include MILO Have-A-Go and MILO Kiwi Cricket.
