It was the Dil-Scoop now it’s the McScoop – the high risk shot that is played to the unprotected area back over the wicket keepers head was superbly executed by BLACKCAPS batting star Brendon McCullum against the Australians in the second Twenty20 over the weekend.
The innovative stroke is similar to that made famous by Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan who played for the Northern Knights during the HRV Cup, hence the Dil-Scoop title.
However after McCullum’s stunning 116* on Sunday night, BLACKCAPS fans have been demanding a name change.
McCullum played the distinctive shot six times, hitting the rope on four occasions and clearing it twice on his way to rare Twenty20 century. BLACKCAPS fans flocked to Facebook to comment on the amazing shot and renamed it the McScoop.
“I think we should rename that shot the McScoop, don’t you?!” asked BLACKCAPS Facebook fan Jess, to which Jordan replied “Deal… now known as the McScoop”.
McCullum is one of the most popular BLACKCAPS amongst junior fans, prompting New Zealand Cricket Development Manager Mark Lane to issue a warning to young cricketers, “It can be a dangerous shot and one that Brendon has practiced for years. It is not something you want to try with a hard cricket ball,” Lane said. “Beware practicing this shot, but if you do want to try it at home use a tennis or foam ball instead.”
