McCullum keen on promotion but selectors call

Brendon McCullum has stated that it was not his decision to play as a specialist batsman in the ICC World Twenty20 and that he is fully committed to the BLACKCAPS.

In a clear-the-air interview with the Dominion Post McCullum said: "I've had absolutely no say in selection or anything for months."

"I took my keeping gloves to the West Indies but was told before we left that I was only going to be backup to Hoppy [Gareth Hopkins].

"Hoppy's done a great job for us over the last six months or so and I enjoy being out there running around in the field. I find it refreshing.

"If they'd asked me to keep at any stage, of course I would've. I'll do anything for the New Zealand cricket team."

McCullum has suffered from lower back problems in recent years but said the decision to give up the gloves will come from the selection team and is not up to him.

"Anyone who knows me knows I will always put the team first and if everyone who sits down in this meeting thinks me keeping is the best way forward for the team then I'll keep doing it.

"Personally I'm not sure if that is the best answer because of how I'm feeling, but let's see. The back gets pretty bad so it is a real dilemma for me."

The BLACKCAPS have struggled to uncover a reliable top order in recent seasons and given the opportunity McCullum feels he could fill the void.

"I know taking away one string from my bow makes me more vulnerable in terms of selection in the side, but I'd like to think the runs I score might go up.

"It's all up in the air but having a crack at the top of the order excites me.

"The middle order is pretty set with Ross [Taylor], Jess [Ryder] and Guppy [Martin Guptill], but the top order has been a problem for us, so No 3 might be something to look at in the future," he said.

The BLACKCAPS are currently in Miami where they take on Sri Lanka in a two match Twenty20 series.
