McCullum double decisive

A fine double by off-spinner Nathan McCullum helped State Otago Volts to a 100-run State Twenty20 victory over State Northern Knights at Dunedin’s University Oval.

McCullum scored an unbeaten 26 off 14 balls to boost the Volts’ total to 185 for eight batting first, before claiming four for 16 and instigating a run out to leave the Knights all out 100 short of their target.

A strong batting performance by the home side saw them accrue enough runs to preserve victory.

Craig Cumming posted two 50-over centuries against the Knights this season, but could not get into double figures this time, posting nine.

But the home captain saw his team respond, with Chris Gaffaney, the first State Twenty20 centurion last season, making 27.

Neil Broom (33), Kieran Noema-Barnett, Greg Todd (both 30) and McCullum contributed to the Volts’ tally.

Peter McGlashan lashed 25 from 15 balls, but no other Knights batsman carried the fight as McCullum and James McMillan, with excellent figures of three for 15, limited the reply.
