Lara bows out with defeat

Brian Lara’s illustrious career ended in defeat after England claimed a one-wicket win over the West Indies in Barbados.

The final match of the ICC World Cup Super Eight Series also brought down the curtain on the Windies captain’s international tenure.

Lara made only 18 of the hosts’ 300, Chris Gayle leading the way with 79.

However, Kevin Pietersen struck a century, Michael Vaughan 79 and Paul Nixon 38 before Stuart Broad’s four ended the contest.

Lara said: "Things didn't work out as planned. It was still a very good cricket game, 600 runs scored in the day and a fitting way to end my career - runs galore.

“Unfortunately I didn't play much of a part with a bat, but I'm really proud of the effort shown by out team but unfortunately we didn't get home, but it's good to see the spirit is still there."

The Trinidadian conceded that despite the personal milestones in his career, his team’s underachievement rankled.

“My dream and my thinking over the last 17 years has been to help the Windies try to stay on top because when I arrived that is where they were,” he said.

“There was a decline and unfortunately we haven't been able to stop that. That has been the most disappointing thing. I'm a team player and if there is one thing I have great hope for is to see this West Indies team get back on top."

BLACKCAPS skipper Stephen Fleming praised Lara earlier this week,

He said: “He's been a wonderful player and a wonderful ambassador to the game as well, I think.

"He's played the game in a very good spirit but done it in an entertaining way. I heard him say he wanted to be an entertainer - he was all that and more.

"He was a player who created interest in New Zealand and around the world, so he brought more players to the game. For a left-hander he was inspirational to watch and play against and it's sad to see him go."
