Kiwi “hero” sends inspirational message to the BLACKCAPS

New Zealand born English rifleman James McKie has been hailed a hero after his bravery during a battle with the Taliban in Afghanstan, however, like every Kiwi he is taking the recognition in his stride.

It also turns out McKie is a huge BLACKCAPS fan and sent a message over the airwaves to Daniel Vettori and the team this morning.

The 29 year old, originally from Wellington, was serving with the British Army when they came under attack by the Taliban. A live grenade was thrown at his group and landed at his feet. He picked it up and threw it back seconds before it exploded in mid air. In turn he received a couple of shrapnel wounds, but saved the lives of two of his comrades.

He has been labelled a national hero and this morning was interview on Newstalk ZB by Mike Hosking. McKie said he was doing what he was trained to do and doesn’t see himself as a hero. “"I don't really like the word. I wouldn't use the word to describe myself. I'm trained, I get paid to do this. This is my job and I enjoy it," he told Hosking.

At the end of the interview he also sent an inspirational message of support to the BLACKCAPS, just in time for their crucial fourth ODI against the Australians tomorrow.

McKie finished his interview by saying, “I would like to wish Daniel Vettori and the rest all the best and let then know that it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.  I want them to give the Aussies heaps.”
