INTERVIEW: Ross Taylor talks to the Press at the end of day one in Napier

Ross Taylor
The BLACKCAPS centurion talks press at the end of day one in Napier.

On how he’s feeling after day one…

“Yeah, I suppose good. Fairly happy with the days work. I’m a bit disappointed because we had a good partnership going and I probably played a reckless shot to get out, but at the same time to get the team to where they are after being 3 for 23 is a pretty good effort.”

On his partnership with Ryder…

“Well we knew it was a pretty good wicket once the new ball shine went off a bit. We knew if we just played straight it’s a pretty fast kind of ground and we just tried to not loose any wickets really.“

On how feeling tired out in the middle…

“Well, I don’t often do that much running between wickets to be honest, but no I felt ok out there. Jesse was a bit help throughout that whole innings, he was geeing me on a lot, so we have to give a lot of credit to Jesse.”

On his nerves…

“Well I haven’t scored any runs of a significant score for a while now so I was probably a lot more nervous than I had been in the past. I am a nervous starter normally so today I was just a little bit more nervous than usual. I was happy with the lead.”

On how excited he is having scored over a century…

“Jeepers, yeah you would have thought it was my first 100 the way I was jumping around but lucky Jesse didn’t get run out towards the end there on 99, so I’ll take that.”

On copying the Indian technique…

“I think its probably there at the Hamilton test, you look at Tendulkars innings and I wouldn’t say he looked scratchy but he didn’t implode throughout the innings.  He gave the bowler respect and when it was time to dominate he did that. I think we just try to respect the good ball and put it away and as it worked out it worked in patches.”

On the days overall result…

“I mean you don’t always get days of 350 on the first day it’s something for the team to be proud of, but its only half the job done when you probably need a minimum of 500- 550 to be competitive. We know that it’s a good wicket and the Indian line up is a very good side so hopefully we can see what the new ball has to offer in the morning and build on it in a 2nd and 3rd innings.”

On his thoughts at 23 for 3…

“I suppose I was probably just worried about my own game, if you start worrying about that you’re probably not concentrating on the right things. As it worked out once again I just have to praise Jesse again for his maturity and keeping me going and hopefully I did the same for him. I just batted really. I don’t know if there’s any other secret other than playing it straight and putting the loose balls away.”

On the Indian fielding…

“I think they were pretty happy when they were 3 for 23, but I guess once you do get a partnership of over 100 not matter what team your playing against you always go a bit quiet in the field.  I guess India went a little bit quiet but having said that they came back well after breaks and kept themselves going.”
