INTERVIEW: Ross Taylor talks at the end of day one

Ross Taylor
BLACKCAPS batting star Ross Taylor talks about the first days play, his form and the referral that went in his favour.

On getting out today…

“Obviously the goal as a batsman is to try and get to three figures and to be very close in the end but not be close enough is obviously disappointing but I can t really complain to much. The shot I played was a poor shot in the end really.”

On his batting performance…

“I felt ok, I guess your going to play a miss on that wicket occasionally. You just hope that you don’t nick it. It’s been a struggle over the last month and a half so I have been working hard on my game with various people over the last week or so, and its always good when you put the hard work in and get some reward at such short notice.”

On his timing and set up…

“I have changed a few things in my set up and I’m trying not to think of it while I’m out there. With the practice facilities here it is quite a low bounce in the nets and obviously the wicket out there had a lot more bounce than the practice wicket so I struggled to get timing in that regard but after half an hour I started getting my feet to move a bit better and I would have liked to done a little earlier.”

On his partnership with Martin Guptill…

“I thought he batted very well. He has had a few starts over his career and it was good for him to go on and get past fifty but I’m sure he will be disappointed also with getting to 60 and doing all the hard work. Hopefully we can both kick on a bit more in the second innings.”

On how the team is feeling at the moment…

“It’s probably evenly placed. That last decision obviously going our way helped us immensely but the partnership of Daniel and Brendon out there at the moment has probably put us back in the match a bit because being 200 for 7 the day’s play would have definitely been Pakistan so being 270 for 6,  I suppose, its even.”

On the pitch…

“I think probably Martin and I probably should have left a few more but there are bare patches and a lot of grass and some get through and some don’t. I think you can show by not every ball carrying to Kamran Akmal so obviously that is going to play a part over the next four days and hopefully we can learn from that and hopefully bowl a little bit straighter for a consistent period.”

On Pakistan using the referral system and being given not out…

“I have seen it since I have been out and it was a little bit closer than I thought. When I first got hit I thought it was quite high and might have even got hit outside the line but as it worked out the umpire made the right decision and I suppose happy for that.”
