INTERVIEW: Mark Greatbatch

Mark Greatbatch
The BLACKCAPS coach talks about the disappointing batting, the decision review system and Tim McIntosh's innings.

On the current state of the game…

“We have still got two days left. We are obviously being outplayed at the moment. I think the Australians bowled particularly well in both innings, hit the deck hard and we haven’t quite adjusted to that attack, but there is still two days left and we just have to keep fighting  Funny things happen in cricket but at the moment we are on the back foot we have just got to keep being positive and see whether we can do something.”

On the beginning of the third day…

“Disappointing. We talked about judging line well and we actually haven’t judged line that well in this game. We know they hit the deck hard and a lot of the balls aren’t actually hitting the stumps, it’s a matter of actually judging that line well so you soak up that pressure. They bowl very good areas for a long period of time and we just haven’t been able to be positive enough to actually break those shackles.”

On the review system…

“It would be fair to say with the system at the moment it’s a little bit inconsistent. We just asked the question whether the system in place at the moment is consistent. The match referee said yes. I’m not sure whether the technology they have got there is good enough, as far as the frames per second.  The ICC say that they are getting more decisions right, from 95 – 98% so I suppose you cant argue with that. I suppose if its improving decision making it’s a good thing.”

On Tim McIntosh…

“He is that type of player. He focuses well, he watches his ball, relaxes in between, it would be nice to see him keep going for nearly five hours. If two or three other guys were doing that then we would be still well in the Test match. Great focus and he learns quick and he has battled hard against a bloody good attack.”
