INTERVIEW: Gary Kirsten talks to the Press before the third Test in Wellington

Gary Kirsten
The Indian coach talks about Dhoni's fitness, saving the last match and their approach for the Wellington Test.

On Dhoni’s fitness…

“Yeah he’s doing good, so we’re hoping he’ll be fit.  No decisions been made yet but he’s doing nicely so far.”

On the pitch and conditions…

“Very good, they are good conditions we are very happy with the conditions here.”

On New Zealand wickets…

“I think what they’ve done throughout this tour is prepare very good cricket wickets. You can see there’s going to be good bounce in the Wellington pitch so it looks like a good wicket.”

On what Teams do with a good wicket…

“It’s really just up to the performance on the day. I think New Zealand shined on the day, they were very competitive well up in that last Test match and we had to use all our determination and will power to save the game which we did fairly well.  But we are looking forward to a very competitive next Test match.”

On whether they were playing for victory or a save during the last Test…

“Once you’re 300 behind and batting again it’s unlikely. We had to bat cautiously - certainly on that fourth day we had two guys that we knew could bat long periods of time which is what was required. For me it was a remarkable performance to be able to save the game from the position.”

On whether he will be demanding more discipline in the First Innings at the 3rd Test…

“No, we play that way, we like to play flair cricket, we like to take it on and like to play aggressively and there’s a risk element in that, but we feel from a batting point of view the team is well balanced and we certainly encourage our guys to take the ball on and really play aggressive cricket.”
