INTERVIEW: Dave Currie and Shane Bond injury announcement

 Dave Currie
The BLACKCAPS manager Dave Currie talks about Shane Bond's injury

“Sadly I need to tell you that Shane has been diagnosed this morning with a slight abdominal muscle tear and wont be playing in the final two test matches, he will be going back to Christchurch to rehabilitate and we will just have to see how that comes along about when in fact he will be playing again. “

On how Bond sustained the injury…

“At some stage during that five days was when he got it. Was a bit uncomfortable to bowl, but all over aspects of his fitness are fine. He could probably play in this test and bowl but as a precautionary measure to make sure, there is a long summer ahead of us, and has to make sure its right and will take a couple of tests off.

On treatment…

Rest and continuing strengthening and working on it but it its only a minor tear and the hope is that he will be back by the middle of the Summer.”

On workload contributing to the injury…

“He doesn’t think workload contributed to the injury. He believes he was ready to do it and he wouldn’t have put his hand up if he wasn’t ready to do it. Its just one of those things.”

On when the injury was recognized…

“He was this morning, uncomfortable. And it really was only a precaution, he felt a bit weary and a bit sore, felt that maybe he should check it out and the scan showed there was a bit of a tear.”

On a replacement…

“The decision hasn’t been made but someone else will be brought in.  Selectors will make a call on that. One of the things we have got is a few fast bowlers knocking at the door so selectors will make a decision this afternoon and we will get somebody here hopefully tonight.”

 Shane Bond
Strike bowler Shane Bond talks about the his injury, the disappointment and his future.

On the disappointment…

“It is frustrating. Its not what I expected to be fair. Today this was just a precaution because I have had an injury in the same region in the past.

There was a little bit of a niggle during the game. By the last session there was nothing so this was just to make sure. I got a bit of a shock when they said there was a bit of a tear there. The thing was I could probably play but if I did there could be the chance that I could blow it completely and then you are out for a long time.”

On workload contributing to the injury…

“I don’t know if it’s the workload. I have prepared for this for the last four months and bowled a lot of overs in the nets, had all the One Day series, so probably what has attributed to it is the amount of overs but that’s just the nature of cricket, that’s just what happens.”

On reconsidering his options…

“I’m a positive person but im also a realist so I will just sit down and think about what it is I want to do from here. I don’t like doing this, I feel like its lets the team down and im sure the team finds it a pain in the backside to have someone coming in and out all the time so I will just have to take some time over Christmas and have a think about it and see what we do.”

On his comeback performance…

“Otherwise I came through the Test great so im pleased to get back to the level of performance that I expect from myself. So its really looking forward to the last two Test matches and it will be a great series. So to be going home and having to watch it on TV is a real pain in the backside.”

On whether the injury was felt during the Test…

“Because I have had an injury there before, its like my back, you always get aches and pains in those sorts of areas so I have had aches and pains there for a long time and I suppose when you are going into a Test with four bowlers you just want to have piece of mind and know that everything is fine. During the Test match itself it was fine, I just wanted to get it checked out to make sure I wasn’t going to let the team down and got a bit of a shock to be fair and im really disappointed. “
