INTERVIEW: Daniel Vettori talks before the first Test

Daniel Vettori
BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori talks about the conditions at Seddon Park, playing two spinners and the injury to Andy McKay.

On the pitch…

“It obviously looks green but I think this type of soil actually plays better than it looks. It may have a little bit of something in it early but its normally dependent on over head conditions so if it’s fine tomorrow then it will probably be a good deck - if its cloudy then maybe it will swing around a bit.”

On pace and carry at Seddon Park…

“I think it will just be a good wicket. Generally throughout the summer, talking to the Northern Districts guys, its played pretty well, pretty true and probably slowed up a little bit as the days have gone on so it will just be a good fair wicket I think.”

On Andy McKay out with injury

“We were going to look to have him play in this just because of the point of difference and bringing him in and seeing how he goes in a Test match, being a left-armer with a bit of pace.  We were looking towards that Australian series as well where it could have been something pretty crucial for us but he has picked up this injury and hopefully he can get back for that series.”

On the pace attack…

“We are looking at the possibility of playing two spinners as well. I think that’s going to come in to play depending on how the wicket dries and the overhead conditions. When you have got Chris Martin, Tim Southee and Daryl Tuffey they offer you options throughout an innings, they are not just new ball bowlers but can take wickets at any time - particularly Chris Martin who is pretty excited to be back in New Zealand colours.”

On the top order batting…

“We have got some pretty new guys involved in that top three. Tim McIntosh by far the most experienced with about 14 games, so it is a tough ask and it has been a challenge for the New Zealand side. These three guys have the opportunity now and McIntosh and Watling played really well in their last Test match so we are hoping for more of the same and Ingram to continue on his One-Day form.”

On two spinners…

“It’s a genuine option. We are going to see what the conditions are like tomorrow, how much the wicket dries out and go from there.”
