INTERVIEW: Daniel Vettori

Daniel Vettori
BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori talks the performance of the Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah, the controversial catch at setting a target.

On overall performance on day three…

“They got 100 too many - obviously we started really well. A great morning session to get five wickets for not many runs but then through some poor bowling and some very good batting. I think Shakib and Mahmudullah played very well, they were busy at the crease, put away every bad ball and put us under a lot of pressure so it’s something we are going to have to rectify when we try and bowl them out in the fourth innings but it was a very good partnership.”

On why this happened with the bowling…

“I think everyone understands that you change from game to game all the time and you have to make sure that you adapt so there are no excuses from that. I think our seamers need to execute better to put Bangladesh under pressure because if you give them loose balls, like any team, they will put you away. We had periods of very good play and then second half where Bangladesh, through Shakib and Mahmudullah dominated us.”

On the dismissal of Shakib Al Hasan…

“I actually have not seen it but from our part McCullum wasn’t sure. He asked me to ask the umpires, I went and asked the umpires and they were happy with it carrying. We did everything we could on our part.”

On Bangladesh questioning the dismissal…

“You have the referral up your sleeve so they could have used the referral, and like I said, McCullum wasn’t 100% so I talked to the umpires and they were confident McCullum caught it.”

On dismissing early batsmen and the form of later batsmen…

“I know obviously Shakib has been playing very well and Mahmudullah got runs against India, I think 96 not out in one of the games. He is not your genuine number eight batsman, he can play and he played very well today so whilst we would have liked to go through them, we were under no illusions that they still had some good batsmen to come and we have to, in their second innings, make sure that we dismiss them early otherwise they could put some pressure on us.”

On a target for Bangladesh to chase…

“We want to obviously bat well in the morning, bat two sessions and see where we are at that stage.”

On the pitch…

“It’s a pretty good deck. There will probably be a few questions asked by the spinners but I still see the seamers playing a big role.”

On the situation regarding the IPL…

“The information is pretty limited. I got an email from Heath Mills last night saying that they are on top of it and they will let us know in the next few days, what the ramifications of that threat is so we will probably sit tight and wait to see what happens from there.
Like we have done in the past, we have backed New Zealand cricket and the players association to understand the landscape and know what the right thing to do is.”
