The BLACKCAPS are determined to keep their foot on the throat as they arrive in Nelson intent on clinching the ANZ One Day series against Sri Lanka.
The visitors barely had a sniff in the opening two fixtures in Christchurch, bowled out for 188 and 117 respectively before those totals were knocked off at break neck speed.
Martin Guptill’s incredible 93 off 30 ball demolition ensured Monday’s record breaking victory by 10 wickets and still had batting coach Craig McMillan in awe a day later.
"It was probably the most complete ODI performance we’ve put together for some time. The way the guys went about their work with the ball and in the field really set things up and after that performance we needed to finish off in style and that was some style so very happy!” McMillan enthused.
“Martin’s showed some outstanding form over the last year and it’s taken him a while to get to this stage and we know how destructive he can be and some of the clean hitting yesterday was exceptional.”
With a double header at Nelson’s Saxton Oval on New Years Eve and January 2nd McMillan’s keen for his men to keep the foot on the gas against a side who are better than what they’ve shown so far.
“During the Test series they showed what a good side they are and I’m sure they will be hurting. We haven’t seen the best of them, but to be fair we’ve got to take a fair bit of credit for that.
"If there was any doubt as to how we are going to play this One Day series - that should be gone now - we’re going to come pretty hard at them,” he added.
Holding a 2-nil lead in the five game series, McMillan said he and his fellow coaches would need to be conscious of any complacency in the side.
"The challenge for us now is to prepare well in Nelson and step it up again.
"As a coaching staff we need to make sure we’re keeping the players on their toes because we want to put in another very good performance and win the series in Nelson.”
There’s still tickets available for the third (December 31st) and fourth (January 2nd) ANZ ODI games at Saxton Oval.
